Why big kids need little kids – and vice versa

Today’s families are often smaller than they were a few generations ago, and we’re less likely to live close to grandparents, aunties, uncles, and cousins. This means it’s not as easy for our kids to spend time with children of different ages. While friends are wonderful, they’re likely to be the same age as your child.

Older children give our kids an understanding and an example of how to handle the next stage of life, and younger children allow them opportunities to teach and nurture. Look for ways to get your children into groups or activities that allow kids of different ages to mix together. Encouraging teens into babysitting for friends and family is another way to build strong community ties and skills in dealing with younger ones.
