Medbury School host Year 5 Leadership Day

Today, Medbury School hosted a series of interactive workshops to introduce the concept of leadership as service to others to a mixed group of Year 5 students from a range of local schools.

The day’s keynote speakers, Payton Edmundson (the Head Prefect of St Margaret’s College) and Zinzan Bondarenko-Leatua (the Head Prefect of Christ’s College), introduced the subject. The workshops were then led by Sport Canterbury, Environment Canterbury, Fire and Emergency New Zealand. In addition, Medbury staff delivered workshops with topics ranging from ‘bicultural leadership’ to ‘global citizenship’.

Director of Leadership and Service, Richard Wilson, said, “The interactive workshops were tailored to suit Year 5 boys and girls and encouraged leadership skills such as communication, teamwork and collaboration, problem-solving, decision-making and conflict resolution”.

Medbury Headmaster, Dave Scott, recognised the “importance of developing character, instilling a sense of purpose beyond the classroom, and nurturing a generation of socially responsible children - who have a commitment to ‘make a difference’ to the lives of others”.

The Year 5 Leadership Day is part of a wider Leadership and Service Programme at Medbury School led by Richard Wilson, whose background includes a career in the British Army.
